How to Store Antiques/Art

Your antiques and art are much to valuable too keep in a dusty garage.  Keep your valuables protected in a state of the art storage facility that has easy access year round.

  1. Put your Antiques in a climate controlled storage unit

Extreme cold or heat can be very damaging for upholstery, paint, wood, metal and other materials when not properly stored.  At Bow City Storage, we ensure the temperature will stay between 15 and 25 degrees year round.

  1. Pack and Store your Antiques and Art carefully

Gently packing and moving all antiques and art will help ensure that nothing gets damaged while in short-term or long-term storage. Below are packing and storage tips that you can follow to keep these valuable belongings safe in your storage unit:

  • Create an inventory list of all antiques and/or art being stored for insurance purposes
  • Spray wooden furniture with high-quality furniture polish for long-term protection
  • Treat leather items with high-quality leather conditioner before moving them to storage
  • Wipe down any metal pieces before packing for storage to prevent rust formation
  • Wrap mirrors, paintings, and other artwork in protective coverings with felt pieces on sharp edges
  • Opt for storage and moving boxes specifically designed for mirrors and large artwork
  • Use furniture sheets, covers, or heavy-duty bags to protect upholstered antiques
  • Cover wooden antiques with bubble wrap or furniture bags to prevent scratches
  • Disassemble weak or heavy pieces of furniture and store them separately
  • Keep all assembly pieces (screws, bolts, etc.) in a plastic bag and tape them to their furniture
  • Do NOT stack antique furniture, as this can create too much pressure and cause damage
  • Raise all storage containers off the ground with pallets in your storage unit
  • Always store heavier storage items on the bottom and lightest on the top
